Stop designing chairs! A new design manifesto.

Make your clothing and shoes hydrophobic… so cool!

The Pet Bed is inspired by the architecture of Sou Fujimoto. Fujimoto describes his houses as Nests or Caves - the most basic form of shelter.  His designs are focused on connecting the inside with the outside by letting light penetrate the building through expansive windows.  Drawing on this we created a Pet Bed that is more like a house: a private shelter that gives the sense of enclosure while still being open and light, for your cats comfort and enjoyment. Cushions not pictured were remove-able and washable.

Fail, More Often

School is the time to experiment and push boundaries. Repeated failure through out the design process is essential. Progress, adapt and learn from your mistakes. If you can master that then your work will be truly great.

Presentation: Scale Models

Scale models are one of the best presentation aids you could have. A scale model will always get noticed first, especially among the sea of printed, 3D rendered proposals. It’s quite possibly the best thing you could do for your projects public image and here’s why:

1. It’s engaging to the general public, from infants to the elderly.

2. It’s a tangible real world object that people can relate to in the physical realm.

3. It allows for intricacies to be seen when they are otherwise lost or misunderstood in printed renderings

4. It shows true commitment to the project - scale models aren’t cheap!

5. The model allows for flaws in the design to arise early.

6. It allows the client and/or the public to have a better understanding of the project as a whole.

Designers Take Note - Tradesmen, Farmers and Technicians Are Your Best Friend

Many of my friends have grown up to work in various technical trade industries. I’ve had the privilege of knowing some people with incredible skill, knowledge and craftsmanship. I’ve learnt more from these hard workers than I’ve learnt from any book. Respect and befriend your fellow tradesman - he’s an invaluable source of information.

I never thought I’d be blogging for a living, but here I am. Bryan and I visited the Nood furniture store in Gastown awhile back. What do you think of Nood and their display?

North Face Chukka GTX - I see it as a logical step forward from the standard desert boot. Performance (GORE-TEX inner liner) and style (suede upper) meet for a more practical shoe for us dual citizen forest/ city roamers.

David Westwood’s LINK surf survival system caught my eye on my recent visit to Emily Carr’s graduation show. Link is designed for in water use, and allows for a full range of motion. I think the reason that the majority of extreme sports athletes avoid the use of safety equipment is that it really hinders their range of motion. Link is trying to change that, a definite step in the right direction.

Franklin Gaw’s Eco-latern.

I could see this product as a fun way of teaching children about growing plants through their different stages of maturity. In addition to this, I see it as a good use of negative space. The area in which the plant inhabits seems like a suitable incubator, and invites on-lookers to view the specimen at any angle. The large opening within the handle lightens the objects appearance, too.
